One of the finest female percussionists with her all female Latin Jazz Ensemble. Cuban percussionist Casales first came to Cape May with Jeanie Bryson in November 1994 and returned many times as a member of a band. After completing a 9-year tour with violinist Regina Carter Mayra formed her own band "Women on Fire" with Mayra on percussion and Cuban Francois Zayas, drums. Mayra is a versatile vocalist, percussionist, arranger, lyricist and composer and is considered one of the most complete percussionists of our time. Born in Cuba, raised in Miami her earlier influences began with the Afro-Cuban musical culture of her surroundings. Mayra performed with some of the biggest names in Latin and Cuban music. In 1978 she moved to NYC to continue her musical journey playing with such greats as Dizzy Gillespie, Ray Barretto. Her fiery and heartfelt spirit with strong roots in Cuban music is always present in her playing. |
